If you've attended shows at San Diego venues with any regularity, than
you're likely already familiar with Adam Gimbel and his band Rookie Card,
performing at the Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd., downtown, tomorrow night.
Practically omnipresent at local events, even if you haven't heard the
groups quirky pop rock music, you've certainly crossed the path of these
kings of self promotion. Featuring Nasrallah Helewa on drums, Gabe Acock
on guitar, ace bass player Jason Hee, as well as frontman Gimbel, their
sound is a kaleidoscopic mix of pop culture,with a healthy helping of
kitsch and tongue firmly in cheek. The band has recently released a CD,
"First Day Of Class", an excellent musical introduction to the quartet;
however, it's in concert where the band truly excels. In particular,
their no holds barred attitude to live performances has begun to make
each show an event, in the true sense of the word. Recent stunts have
included playing between movies at the Ken Cinema and shocking the staff
at the Hard Rock Cafe by plugging into the guitars on their walls, and
jamming out a solo, to name just a few. It's that sense of adventure and
mischief that makes a set by Rookie Card or any of their countless
offshoots so much fun. You never know what's going to happen.
Friday November 8 $12. 9 p.m. 21 and up. (619) 232-4355.
