07/23/04 ALBUM OUT! (THE DAY AFTER)
The album is out! Thanks to everyone who came out last night for our record release show & a BIG thanks to everyone who helped decorate, play along and especially Shandree for manning the merch all night! It's easily the most folks who have ever come to see us and we had a BLAST. The ending was INCREDIBLE. We took everyone outside to sing one last song on the "second stage" (the front stoop out in front of the Casbah). Near the end of the last song, a plane flew over and we just HAPPENED to know "Back In The USSR" so we did it (I know, Adam did it a few years ago but that's not the good part). At the exact moment that the song was ending, ANOTHER plane flew over. Oh.....my......god. Paul McCartney must have connections at air traffic control. Check out photos and 2 videos of the blessed event. Near Mint is currently available exclusively at M-Theory Music (3004 Juniper Street in South Park). We'll have a list of places to get the album locally AND online in the next week or 2!

06/07/04: THE FIRST NEW LINEUP PHOTO SESSION

Polaroids from Nasr's 30th birthday party. Kevin's boyish good looks makes Adam's windswept Jewfro look even more ridiculous. Thanks to Dario & Ellen for finding the Rookie thrifstore shirt.

06/03/04: WE GOT US A (NEWER) BASSIST
10 days ago, we got ourselves a new bassist but scheduling just won't allow him to become a Rookie. Frustrated, we grabbed the youngest, good looking guy we could find, gave him a bass and called him Rookie. Luckily for us, it was our old friend Kevin Gossett, who happens to play bass and sing just fine thankyouverymuch. Ok, NOW we're ready to rock. Tons of cool stuff is being planned, including the release of our debut album, Near Mint, in late July. You can check out mp3's up online on our SOUNDS PAGE and let us know what you think!

04/08/04: ROOKIE CARD NEEDS A BASSIST
No foolin'. Everyone bid Jason Hee a fond farewell. This is not a surprise but still not easy to take. We've always known that Jason's a talented songwriter & guitarist in his own right and the Buzzkill Romantics more than proves it. There just aren't enough hours in the day. He'll keep playing with us 'till we find someone. He's just that sweet. Please help us find Rookie #8(!)

We JUST got asked to play after the San Diego Gulls game this Saturday night at the San Diego Sports Arena in the downstairs bar. We have a few free tickets, so let us know if you'd like to go to the game. First come, first served.

THE JACK BLACK TALE by Adam (as seen in >San Diego Citybeat)
So I went to go put Replacments flyers up at the Casbah last week. Urge Overkill was playing a soldout show. They let me go in just to put stuff up and I saw Marie, who asked me if I got her message. What message? Jack Black was there.

Remind/rewind: a couple of years ago, local writer Ed Decker was interviewing Tenacious D for SLAMM and asked me for questions. I told him to tell to tell them their album isn't any funnier with a full band behind them..... Kyle said, "Who wrote that?" "A guy named Adam," Ed answered. "He's a local musician." "Hey Adam, fuck you. Stop listening," Kyle shouted into the phone, followed by Jack, who added, "Oh, and send us your shitty album, so we can throw it away."

I didn't want to run around and miss him but I figured I'd kick myself later if I didn't try. I drove to my office, made a quick copy of the article, grabbed a Rookie cd and raced out the door. Got back & waited patiently outside for him to finish talking to various folks. He was kinda drunk but very nice. Said he'd listen to the cd before he threw it away and was SUPER serious about wanting to look funny for the camera, insisting on seeing it on Bill's digital camera right after (he did this with 3 different people). Classic.

ZIGGY SHUFFLEDUST IN PARTIES (BAUHAUS TRIBUTE)
For their first performance in over a year (not counting Cover Me American Idol), Cover Me Badd presents a set of covers by Minneapolis' greatest export, the Mats. The Replacements' Replacements (aka Paul Shook Down aka Cover Me Impressed aka Here Comes A Westerberg) features Adam Gimbel (Rookie Card, arguably already a 'Mats tribute), Gerry Wasson (former touring bassist for the Georgia Satellites & the Allman Brothers Band), Stinky (the Rugburns) and Rick Wilkins, who actually led a blues/swing band called the Nightclub Jitters. It'll be an appropriately underrehearsed fun set and the notoriously sober Gimbel is even threatening to have a drink or two for authenticity. Headlining the show will be Gary Shuffler's fantastic Bauhaus tribute, who made history last month when THE David J hopped up midset to play with them. What the hell kind of pairing is Bauhaus and the Replacements, you ask? Have you ever seen Daniel Ash and Tommy Stinson in the same room? I didn't think so.

ONLINE PHOTO ALBUMS WITH TONS OF COOL PICTURES
We highly recommend SingleClick.com as an easy, free place to put your photos. Our friend Joe, who created the site, has been nice enough to take pictures at our shows and put them up online for a long while. Jason & Adam finally got around to creating their own albums and putting up tons of cool stuff that's been sitting on our harddrives for awhile (Milkley CrŸe, Rookies at Jack Murphy Stadium, Wankers at Knitting Factory and lots of fun shots of our friends, including that naked one of you). Check it out: http://www.singleclick.com/gallery/heemusic and http://www.singleclick.com/gallery/adamn. You can even leave comments on the photos, so tell us what you think!

NASR FINISHES THE TOURIN' TALE

WHAT ARE WORDS FOR?
Adam here. I write 99% of the lyrics for Rookie Card. I've always thought it was REALLY pretentious to put your lyrics up online for songs that haven't been recorded yet. Does your band do that? Oh. Well, guess what? No one cares and your lyrics are shite. So are mine but we have some songs recorded now and I tend to mumble, so here you go. Tell me what you mistakedly thought I was singing. I love that stuff. By the way, I was just kidding. My lyrics aren't shite and I don't mumble.

IN THE NEAR FUTURE:
Recording full length album, screening of Canadian documentary with RC song, "2/29" show, Rookie reunion show (original members) and more!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for such an amazing year. Things just keep getting better and better for us and it's thanks to y'all. The worst thing about being in a local band is that it sometimes feels like an exercise in getting your friends to come and see you play twice a month. Thanks for your understanding with these e-mails and coming out to support us. A huge thanks also to all of the radio, press and club people for helping to spread the word. Without you, our bio would be even more self-indulgent than it already is.

Best wishes for 2004,
RC

HOLIDAYTIME TV STARS

Last week we performed our new original seasonal favorite "The Sun Always Shines On Christmas" at the local Fox studios for Fox Rox's annual Christmas Disaster special. Bad Credit, Reeve Oliver, the Cankles and Anya Marina also did their X-mas-y thing. The show airs on Fox 6 on Thursday night at midnight and Sunday at 11pm and also on UPN13 on Saturday night at 11pm. The official premiere party is this Thursday night at back bar of Casbah! It's a cool night with birthday boy Gary Shuffler's Tom Jones cover set, 60's soul/garage band the Viewmasters, new hardcore gay (joke) rap outfit, Hissy Fit and some kind of 60's classic rock karaoke thing too (like what we did). Should be fun!

AUDIO KILLED THE RADIO STAR
Sunday December 21st 6pm on 91X
This Sunday, for the first time in over two years, Rookie Card will be performing live on 91X's local music show, Loudspeaker. We're taping a special segment earlier in the afternoon with us playing a few songs live and gabbing that they'll play at 6pm. Tune in!

RABBI PRESSES PLAY FOR CHARITY:
JEWS EXPLOSION VIDEO PARTY/BENEFIT
Monday, December 22nd 9pm
THE WHISTLE STOP
2236 Fern St in South Park (San Diego)
In lieu of actual concerts this year, Rabbi Gimbel's Jews Explosion is hosting a fundraiser at the Southpark's favorite cozy neighborhood bar, the Whistle Stop. The band known for celebrating Jewish rock from Jane's Addiction to Neil Diamond will host the fourth night of Chanukah with videos that show hilariously edited highlights from the band's past two years of shows in San Diego and Los Angeles, backstage circumcisions, the group's television debut on Fox Rox, hardcore bar mitzvah footage and much, much more. These kosher films will be followed by a video compilation that includes Star Search video rejects, Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Ed McMahon drunk, vintage McDonalds training films and other "stuff". Earlybirds can come watch Oasis parody Fookin Wankers highlights at 8:30pm, including infamous footage of the act getting kicked offstage at Beatlefair 2002. Donations will be accepted for The San Diego Foundation, who works with non-profit organizations to get money to people with low-incomes and projects like the rebuilding of schools, parks and playgrounds. Free Chanukah gifts for anyone who makes a donation!

MAY BE THE LAST TIME, I DON'T KNOW
Wednesday, December 24th at The Casbah 9:00pm
For 10 years, the Dragons have played Rolling Stones covers on Christmas Eve. This year will be the last for this tradition so, even though it's free, it is sure to "sell out" earlier than usual. Don't spend too much time at that family function! Rumors are flying as to who could possibly carry the torch to keep this tradition going.... DJ Adrock SD (guess who?) will be playing all kinds of cool Stones related songs for the earlybirds. Is it safe to play Britney doing "Satisfaction" at the Casbah? We shall see.
