SEE US PLAY, GET A CARD
We went a little nuts at Comicon last weekend. Now, anyone on our mailing list who comes to see us play will get a randomly picked trading card (free pre-printed "Rookie Card" plastic holder included). It could be Menudo. It could be Home Alone 2. It could be country stars with mullets. You never know! Offer good at ANY Rookie Card show while supplies last, so come early and often.
BAY AREA HERE WE COME We got asked to be the house band at record industry giant Pat Secor's wedding at a secret Bay Area location on Sunday, September 15th. We will do just that AND play a nearby show for the public on September 14th at Talk of the Town in Oakland. Our first road trip! I doubt we'll get up there again anytime soon, so PLEASE come keep us company.
ROOKIE CARD'S DEBUT EP HAS A NAME Thanks everyone who voted and gave us suggestions. "Short Bus To Stardom" won by a large margin, so we decided to call it "FIRST DAY OF CLASS". It's America. The popular vote does not a winner make. As soon as we get it mastered, photographed and printed, you can get it. Look for a release party in the next month or two. Go listen to the four tracks right now at http://mp3.com/rookiecard.

TUNES ON TAPE
After a year and a half, the Rookie Card kids finally stood (and sat) in front of microphones and recorded a few of their songs. Most of it was recorded in one extremely productive day at UCSD's KSDT Studios by Pete Bejarano. We finished up recording and mixing a few weeks later at Mike Kamoo's Earthling Studios. There will be properly printed copies to sell and give away very soon but you can check out all four songs right now at http://mp3.com/rookiecard . So far, we've already had three #1's in mp3.com's San Diego genre "charts" with "Put Your Honey Where My Mouth Is" (Alternative Country), "2/29" (Powerpop) and "...in bed" (Indiepop/Lofi). Don't forget about crowd favorite "Green Glo" which has barely cracked the top 100 of the local "Alternative General" chart, where the competition is mucho plenty. Please check out our stuff because even though Jason analyzes stats at mp3.com, he apparently isn't allowed to rig the charts. Only YOU can make us huge, so please go take a listen!

HELP NAME OUR DEBUT EP What do you think?

STROKING SOMETHINGRATHER
We've been scheming to cover a medleyesque version of the Strokes' "Last Nite" and Tom Petty's "American Girl" for quite awhile. We finally got it together with Pure Milk's Jeff Musser on guitar and, for a quick second, it looked like we had a shot at actually OPENING the sold out Strokes show at 4th & B. It didn't happen but we debuted it a week later, the same night that the Strokes were playing at UCSD's RIMAC Arena with Tenacious D. It must've been a slow news day because Wireless Flash, a nationwide news service that tons of talk shows use for story ideas, made our tune into a news story. Does anyone know if Jay Leno actually talked about it? We're not exactly sure what the punchline would've been.

04.24.02 A BUNCHA QUICK THINGS

Firstly and most importantly, we got a guitarist, Mr. Gabe Acock. We won't put up a page about him until we're sure that it won't jinx him staying on.

Jason and Adam played a Surfrider benefit/surf movie premiere at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art. They learned the Beach Boys' "Surfin'", the Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation" and Weezer's "Surf Wax America" for the occasion. The first screening went really well. Not one darn surfer clapped after their first song before the second showing. Ouch.

Adam semi-innocently passed out "B.M.RC." flyers outside of the recent Strokes show as an April Fool's joke of sorts. Everyone thought it was for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Giggle.

We played an acoustic instore at M-Theory Music with Brad Paye, who added mandolin on a few songs, including our first ever baseball related cover, "Boys Of Summer" (a nickname for the old Brooklyn Dodgers). People seem to like us better that way. Hmmmm.

Lastly, in an interview for SLAMM Magazine, local writer Edwin Decker read a comment to Tenacious D that Adam made about their album being less funny with a full band behind them. Their reaction?

Kyle said, "Who wrote that?"
"A guy named Adam," Ed answered. "He's a local musician."
"Hey Adam, fuck you. Stop listening," Kyle shouted into the phone, followed by Jack, who added, "Oh, and send us your shitty album, so we can throw it away."

Giggle. Adam sez: The D are the greatest band on earth. We are deeply saddened that we can't go see them play on April 30th because we're playing at a competing "club" the same night. I still stand by what I said. They should've just made a live album instead. As soon as we have an album for Jack to throw away, we'll send them a copy. We did some quickie 4 track recordings recently that came out alright but I doubt Jack would like them.

04.01.02 JINX
But, then again, no. Eric decided it just wasn't his thing. He still recognizes our genius and we still like him lots. Didn't you say that you knew somebody? The shows will go on in trio form and more are being planned for May. Did we mention that we need a lead guitarist? 'Cause we do.

03.22.02
For the first time in their history, Rookie Card has a solid four piece lineup. Eric Daniel has joined up as our lead guitarist and we couldn't be happier. He brings all kinds of great stuff to the band. We'll finally get on to things that we've never been able to do before: recording, regular gigs, band photos, merch, combining our bank accounts, etc.

02.20.02
Still needing a guitarist. Auditions continue. Doing trio shows that aren't half bad! The last show was a ton o' fun! Not being under the usual indie-rock scrutiny and having more time to kill, the boys offered up a solo acoustic section (Jason shines!) and made entertaining stabs at "Let Love Rule", "Wanted Dead or Alive", the Fabs' "Birthday", "Freebird", Spice Girls' "Say You'll Be There", "Come As You Are", "More Than A Feeling" and others no one can (or wants to) remember. Dirtnap actually knew their covers and were nice enough to have Adam come up and sing a few, even unwittingly starting into "867-5309" which Adam sang right at Jennifer Hudson, neatly slipping her real phone number (619-***-***9) into the chorus.

12.06.01
Adam is involved in some incredibly cool holidaytime shows. Check out his solo page for more details.

11.30.01
We got ourselves a bass player! Jason Hee wooed us for a long time and now he is one of the pack. Still looking for a lead guitarist if you know anyone. George Harrison, we love you.

08.16.01
Months of speculation are over. John & Kristin are moving to glamorous Glendale to teach the youth of America the Andrews/Frakes way. We'll miss them tons. That leaves just Nas and Adam as the lone Rookie Cards. As extremely talented as they are, they need help. So, if you know anyone.....

08.06.01 It's the day after our show with the Pernice Brothers and Slink and we're still reeling. The show was a featured concert in SLAMM, the San Diego Reader and the San Diego Union Tribune. The Casbah was packed by fans of all three bands and was (again) our best show to date. Bass duties were handled by Nas' friend "Tony", who looked suspiciously like our old bass player Tim, but this guy had a mullet, a studded braclet, a Houston Oilers baseball cap and a jeans jacket. Besides hearing revved up takes of all of our old self-penned standards, Adam juggled instant requests for the Replacements' "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", "New York City Cops" by The Strokes AND the Kiss classic "Detroit Rock City" over the end of "2/29", all while sporting a rare Rookie Card shirt from the 70's (pictured). HUGE thumbs up to superfan Dan Buczaczer (the guy who got up and gave Adam hot onstage boy-on-boy hug action right after they played) who made a surprise appearance from San Francisco, drove up to Orange County right afterwards and took a 6 am flight this morning to make it to work on time!

RADIO DARLINGS
RC made its world radio debut last week on 92.1's Go Loco local musicshow. We talked it up with dj Scott Riggs and played four acoustic tunes. The very next night/early morning, we played on 91X's own famed local show, Loudspeaker, making us the first band to ever play live on both shows on successive nights. Why? Because we are whores. Dirty little whores. John turned 30 at midnight and we closed the show with a couple of unplugged tunes and quality gabbin'.
